The bitterest cold we've experienced in years is on the way this weekend, but why is it so awful feeling? And why does the temperature feel colder than what it actually is?

Wind chill is used to explain the way the weather will feel. It's a formula that calculates how actual temperature (what the thermometer says), wind, and humidity combine to feel to your body.

Here's a look at how wind impacts the way temperature feels. The stronger the wind, the worse the temperature feels to your body. The colder the wind chill, the more dangerous.

When temperatures are expected to reach a dangerous level of cold, the National Weather Service will issue advisories, watches, or warnings that are issued based on the feels like temperature. In general, the tri-state observes the following criteria:

Here's an example of what an extreme cold watch would look like on a map

What can you do when we are expecting dangerous cold?

1. Anticipate frostbite and hypothermia risks and limit outdoor time. These can occur within just a few minutes of being outside and exposed to the cold.

2. Dress warmly. Add many layers and don't forget about keeping your hands, feet, and face warm! Cover as much exposed skin as possible.

3. Don't forget to check on those vulnerable to cold! Elderly, babies, and those with health conditions can struggle in the cold.

4. Furry friends are cold too! Make sure that you are protecting their paws on walks-- booties will cover their feet from extreme cold as well as salt that can be harmful to them. Coats are also a good idea for when they need to go out in extreme cold.

5. Weather prepare your house or apartment! When temps dip this low, make sure you cover exposed pipes, keep water dripping, and have working heat.
