Ads for Aqua Dots, a dangerous toy that was recalled weeks ago, were found in Sunday morning papers.
Aqua Dots was recalled because the colorful beads it is comprised of are coated with a chemical that can act as the date rape drug if swallowed. So far, nine children in the United States have fallen ill because of the toy.
Ads for the toy appeared in a Toys ?R Us circular Sunday morning, and the chain store is trying to explain how the mistake happened.
?I noticed that a lot of stores still have them advertised,? said Ronnie Beugge, a Valley Stream resident. ?I think it?s bad.?
Officials for Toys ?R Us say that Aqua Dots are not on sale and are not available in their stores. They say the ads were printed and distributed before the recall. They also said the ads could continue to appear in newspapers for weeks because they weren?t able to catch it on time.
Some customers don?t believe the excuses, saying that Toys ?R Us had enough money and plenty of time to correct the mistake.
?At least put a retraction in the newspaper that this item is no longer available and no longer for sale,? said Anthony Deus, a Rockville Center resident.
The Aqua Dots toy was also allegedly advertised in a Target store circular, but officials for Target say they ran ads in the front section of the newspaper saying the toy was no longer available.
