Officials say dangerous chemicals have been found in wells near the Suffolk County Fire Academy.
The Yaphank facility is on the Superfund list and considered a "significant threat" to health and the environment.
Suffolk says it will hook up 50 homes in the area to public water to avoid contamination.
The harmful chemicals have been used as fire suppressants.
The chemicals have been linked to developmental problems in fetuses and cancer.
