A Nassau probation officer was arrested Wednesday after being accused of bribing a woman on probation to steal in exchange for positive probation reports.
According to investigators, Andy Jean-Louis, 46, verbally coerced one of his probationers to steal items from stores and then return them in exchange for gift cards. The gift cards were allegedly needed to buy clothes for his children.
Authorities say the probationer received some money from Jean-Louis for the gift cards. Those cards were from T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and Best Buy, totaling more than $800.
Defense attorney Mikil Makelele said Wednesday that Jean-Louis "denies these charges."
"The truth will ultimately come out. As of right now, my client maintains his innocence," says Makelele.
Jean-Louis, of Dix Hills, pleaded not guilty on bribery and official misconduct charges.
His bail was set at $25,000 cash or bond. Jean-Louis is due back in court on Aug. 29.
