Despite community opposition, CVS is pushing to get Smithtown's OK to build a store in St. James.
Community members say the proposed store on the corner of Lake and Woodlawn avenues would ruin the small-town charm of the area.
It would also threaten to put mom-and-pop stores out of business, including a pharmacy that has been in the community for 70 years.
Smithtown had denied the 24-hour CVS store the variance it needed last fall.
A hearing on the matter is scheduled for June 9 at 7 p.m. at the Smithtown Senior Center.
