With Gov. Andrew Cuomo's new restrictions in place for Thanksgiving gatherings – does this change Long Islanders' plans?
Long Islanders are heading to supermarkets to buy turkeys and other trimmings they need to make the perfect dinner.
However, Gov. Cuomo announced that no more than 10 people are allowed to get together at private residences, even if they're outside. That's down considerably from the previous limit of 50.
News 12 spoke with some shoppers Thursday - some say they're willing to go along with the order if it means their loved ones will be safe.
However, others called it an overreach by the governor.
Dr. Bruce Polsky of NYU Langone Hospital discusses gatherings during the upcoming holidays.
"I think that's unfair. It is your home, your personal residence. It's generally only your family members. So there aren't too many people, you're not putting a lot of people at risk. It's not a super spreader event. I think it's going overboard," says Nick Mazzillo, of Woodbury.
The governor's order officially goes into effect at 10 p.m. Friday. Officials with both the Nassau and Suffolk police departments say they will respond to reports of individuals and businesses failing to follow COVID-19 guidelines.
Some are going a step further in how they advise holiday plans are carried out. Dr. Bruce Polsky at NYU Langone Hospital says holiday gatherings should only involve people you live with and interact with regularly. If anyone else is coming, including returning college students, he's recommending extreme caution.
"The safest approach would be for those individuals to have quarantine for the previous two weeks, and to be tested very shortly before the event," says Polsky.
