Nassau CSEA President Jerry Laricchiuta is calling for the legislature to make immediate improvements to the Nassau Juvenile Detention Center in Westbury.
Laricchiuta says the facility, which was built in 1955 and has not seen any major renovations since the 1970?s, is in desperate need of a new roof and ventilation system. He says paint chips are falling, walls are moldy and floors are dirty. Union officials say the situation is unacceptable and they will not wait any longer.
County officials say $3 million is included for the project in the capital plan over the next three years, and say once it is approved renovations can begin. Officials expect to discuss the budget at the next legislative meeting on Monday.
