Two people were hurt in a crash on Sunrise Highway that caused significant traffic delays ahead of the evening rush and into Tuesday night.

Suffolk County police say they responded around 1 p.m. to the Bayport crash near the Waverly Avenue ramp.

The left eastbound lane was closed during the police investigation.

Police say 25-year-old Mario Auer was driving eastbound near Nicolls Road when he lost control, hit the center median and overturned. He and his passenger, 28-year-old Caitlyn Rose Lovelock were ejected.

Auer, of Shirley, was sent to the hospital with serious injuries.

Lovelock, of Mastic Beach, had minor injuries.
