A couple is charged with robbery in what police are calling a Bonnie and Clyde scheme aimed at grabbing the jewelry off the necks of unsuspecting victims.
Dana and Michael Smolen are accused of robbing two teens to feed their heroin habit. Police say Dana Smolen would drive around in the couple?s blue Chevy Blazer while the husband would look out for potential victims. The couple would pretend to ask for directions, snatch the jewelry and then drive away.
Police say they robbed a 17-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy on a Bellmore street Wednesday. The Smolens then allegedly sold the jewelry to a pawn shop.
After the incidents, descriptions of the suspects and the vehicle went out over police radio. An off-duty officer spotted the couple ?s car in the parking lot of a Massapequa supermarket Wednesday night.
Police say there could be more victims and are urging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
