In an unexpected turn of events, a longstanding member of Manhattan’s Community Board 5, Craig Slutzkin, has alleged that Borough President Mark Levine has decided not to reappoint him, citing his support for a resolution involving transgender children in sports.
Slutzkin, who has served the board in various roles, including secretary and second vice chair, expressed his dismay over the decision, suspecting it to be politically motivated interference.
Slutzkin's support for a resolution at the Community Education Council addressing transgender participation in sports stirred the controversy. Some argue that the resolution challenged the school system's policy on transgender girls' participation, Slutzkin defended it as a call for dialogue, emphasizing the importance of engaging in difficult conversations with integrity and impartiality.
Assembly Member Tony Simone joined the fray, denouncing Slutzkin's stance on the resolution as discriminatory and transphobic. This comes after Slutzkin said he was nominated to run for the chairmanship of the board.
Community Board 5 comprises 50 volunteer members, appointed by the borough president’s office in consultation with City Council members. In response to inquiries, Levine’s office refrained from issuing public statements regarding individual appointments, citing the multifaceted considerations involved in the decision-making process.
Levine's office said he maintains a holistic approach in its decision-making, declining to provide further details on Slutzkin's removal.
The next full board meeting is scheduled for May 9.
