The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) and KeySpan are asking all customers to help conserve energy as temperatures soar during the summer heat wave.
LIPA chairman Richard Kessel is projecting record demand for Tuesday and Wednesday and calls the heat wave an extraordinary event electrically on Long Island. Officials say more than 2,300 customers lost power Monday when fuses melted and transformers broke down. Kessel says power was restored in an average of less than three hours.
Kessel says there are enough megawatts on and off Long Island to keep all the lights on, but he advises residents call the LIPA call center in the event of an outage. \
