Long Island Railroad commuters may have to soon search for alternative routes. The MTA says a possible strike could shut down service starting May 16.

Some people who take the LIRR every day say their travel times could double if they're forced to drive instead.

Limited shuttle services will be offered if a shutdown does happen, but some commuters say that's simply not an option.

"The locations where they're offering shuttles, they're nowhere near where I live," said one passenger. "To drive over there and then deal with the traffic getting there, plus the crowd, it's going to still be a nightmare."

The MTA says negotiations with the unions are in progress in hopes that a strike doesn't happen.
