Meryl Ain is a Jewish author from Commack who recently published a post-Holocaust historical fiction book.
“Shadows We Carry” follows the daughters of a Holocaust survivor as they navigate the women’s rights movement of the late 1960s.
The book includes local ties, including a fictional version of the real Nazi Youth Camp in Yaphank.
Ain says reading Anne Frank’s diary when she was in sixth grade sparked a life-long quest to understand the Holocaust and how it happened.
The author says she believes it is important to tell stories about survivors after the war was over.
“I certainly wanted to highlight the danger of prejudice towards any minority group and certainly Nazism, which is shocking that it's rearing its ugly head again,” she said.
