Streets across the city were closed to cars on Saturday as part of the city’s “Car-Free Earth Day.”

The event also featured a number of programs, including music, activities and educational programs as well as health and food services.

“Car-Free Earth Day" is part of ongoing efforts from the city's Department of Transportation to promote sustainable modes of transportation and to protect the environment.

It was also a way for members of the community to come together.

"We were waiting for an appointment and we saw that you guys were here," attendee Emelia Mensahsarvah said, "so we just decided to come and enjoy."

"[The event aims]to bring us together, to educate us, to keep us informed of all the services that's out here, where to get them, even in the rain people came out here," said vendor Chef Wilson.

Citi Bike is offering unlimited 30-minute rides all day as part of the car-free efforts. People who wish to participate can do so by using the code LYFTEARTHDAY26.
