Renovations on a Hempstead home came to a halt after a thief stole thousands in tools from a charity. But on Thursday, it was back to work thanks to some generosity.
The charity Rescuing Families was part of the renovation for a mother of two who is in a wheelchair. But $25,000 in tools were stolen, putting a stop to the important work.
News 12 covered the story over the weekend, and what followed was an outpouring of support from individuals and companies nationwide.
"Two nights ago, we had Milwaukee Tool Company call us and reach out to us," says Gina Centauro, of Rescuing Families. "Yesterday, we had Lowe's out in Patchogue that saw your show, your story, and Home Depot as well. So, we're getting a lot of response not just from our neighbors and friends but from corporations as well."
Rescuing Families put the donated tools to work right away, building a handicap-accessible backyard deck. They did it with help of volunteer contractors who traveled from New Jersey to pitch in.
The charity's founders say the kindness of strangers has restored their faith in humanity.
"It really showed us that when people come together, we really can get things done," says Vincent Centauro.
The charity says they'll be able to complete renovations for the family to move in by early July
