An inpatient medical unit for veterans at Castle Point that is used for patients suffering from substance abuse is now temporarily closed.

A representative for the VA facility in Wappingers Falls says its “acute inpatient unit” closed on Saturday and will remain closed for 120 days while the hospital re-evaluates staffing needs.

“This will not affect any of the other services provided to our veterans, who will still be able to receive primary care, specialty care, outpatient mental health services and other services elsewhere in the facility. In addition, Castle Point’s Community Living Center will remain open and operational,” says David Marshall, VA Hudson Valley Health Care System executive assistant to the director.

News 12’s inquiry to the hospital was prompted by a tip from a registered nurse employed at the facility who said there’s no covering provider and that they are unable to hire one due to the federal hiring freeze.

Rep. Pat Ryan says he’s taking immediate action to get the 20-bed unit reopened.

“Let me be crystal clear: I will fight to the ends of the Earth before I let my fellow veterans lose life-saving care. This should not be political – it is about doing right by those who put their lives on the line for our country,” said Ryan. “I’m in constant communication with our local Veterans’ organizations, and we will be taking immediate action to get this unit reopened ASAP!”

The hospital says the closure was pre-planned and is unrelated to the federal hiring or funding freeze, and said veterans who would normally receive care in the unit are being routed to the nearest community or VA medical facility.
