Carol Baldwin, mother of the actors Billy, Stephen, Alec and Daniel Baldwin, died at the age of 92.
The Massapequa native spent 25 years raising awareness and funds to fight breast cancer.
Breast cancer survivor Lorraine Pace was one of Baldwin's closest allies in her battle.
She suggested that Baldwin use her status as the mother of four celebrity sons to shine the spotlight on the cause.
"I said, 'This is good Carol, your family will attract a lot of young girls because of all your handsome sons,'" Pace says. "And it worked."
Baldwin hosted fundraisers, made speeches and attended marches and walks for a cure.
The Baldwin matriarch and her supporters raised $5 million and launched the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund on the campus at Stony Brook University.
The Baldwin fund's efforts include studying the causes of breast cancer, educating medical professionals and the public, prevention, treatment and community outreach.
"Women would call her when they had breast cancer and she would go to bat for them," says Dr. Brian O'Hea, director and president of the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Center. "She would make sure they would get the right care. She felt for them."
Pace says the power of Baldwin's advocacy was in her human touch and fighting spirit.
Baldwin is survived by her six children, 25 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
