A Carle Place High School senior broke a school basketball record Wednesday night.
During a game against Locust Valley, Ryan Leary scored 1,469 points at his school, breaking the record set in 1970.
“It kind of feels a little bit surreal,” Leary said.
Leary won the game with less than 90 seconds to spare.
“The more important thing was the win,” Leary said. “This record was just a nice cherry on top.”
He’s had a lot of support from family, friends and teammates on this journey.
“A 50 plus year record broke by a kid who, you know, worked his butt off,” said athletic director Justin Block said. “You know, he's come to practice. He's a leader, and he deserves it… It's a huge deal. And you know, to our community, which is so small, it's everything.”
Leary has been playing basketball his entire life, and he says there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes. He’s proud of where his hard work has gotten him.
“I just cemented myself in Carle Place history…” Leary said. “It's just a great feeling.”
There’s still a lot of the season left to go. Leary says he’s going to play just as hard and hopefully reach his goal of 2,000 points.
