A 5-year-old girl is hospitalized in serious condition after she was struck by a car Tuesday in Hempstead.
Nassau police say the girl was crossing Cathedral and Fulton avenues with her 8-year-old brother around 3:30 p.m., but the pair was crossing against traffic. Police say a Toyota struck the child, throwing her onto the street.
According to police, a crossing guard in the area tried to tell the girl to wait and was trying to slow traffic.
The child was taken to Winthrop-University Hospital, where police say her mother rushed to be by her side. According to officials, the mother was at home as the children were walking to the house from school.
Police describe the intersection as being very dangerous and say no charges will be filed against the driver, who had the right of way.
