Calverton woman claims harassment over religious message
A Calverton woman says her religious message scrawled on the side of a tractor-trailer on her farm has triggered harassment from the Town of Riverhead.
Marie Tooker says she wrote the words "I love you God Thank You" on the trailer, which has been used for the last 10 years as storage. She says it wasn't until this year that the town issued her a violation.
She received a ticket from the Town of Riverhead for the trailer being unregistered. Tooker says the issue is much deeper.
"This is complete harassment," she says. "They don't care about the tractor-trailer. They care about the words that I wrote."
Tooker pleaded not guilty in court and says she plans to register the trailer.
Town Supervisor Sean Walter says he has no problem with the sign and that he wants to work with Tooker to make it legal.
