A woman and her daughter are grappling with fear after their home was struck by bullets early this morning.
Zakia Mapp, a resident of the home on Nicolls Road, recounted the terrifying moment when at least three bullets struck the house around 4 a.m. The bullets nearly missed Zakia and her daughter Tanashe while they slept in their beds.
"I dropped to the floor immediately. Crawled out my room to my little girl and said, 'Oh my God, they're shooting,'" Mapp said, describing the horror she felt in the moments following the gunfire. One of the bullets hit the floor of Mapp's bedroom.
Tanashe, who was also in her room at the time, described the chilling experience.
"My bed is really eye level to this window. So God forbid they shot down here, I would have been hit," she said.
This incident marks the second time the home has been targeted by gunfire in recent months.
The family now faces an agonizing decision as they consider leaving the place they've called home for the past two decades.
"It’s just sad how I’ve been living here for so long and now we’re being targeted," says Mapp. "For me to wake up to a bullet hole like that is terrifying."
For Tanashe, the fear is palpable.
"Now I feel like it’s not safe. We’re hoping to eventually move out, but for now, we’re hoping Suffolk County police do their job investigating this crime," she said.
Suffolk County police confirmed that they responded to the scene Wednesday morning and are actively investigating the incident.
No one was injured in the shooting, and authorities have made no arrests at this time.
