Close to 180 animals at Animal Care Centers of New York City in East New York are desperately waiting for a forever home - and they were hoping for the chance on National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day Tuesday.

Across all their shelters, ACC currently has over 500 animals up for adoption, and staff members say the numbers keep growing.

"We actually have dogs who have to live temporarily in pop-up crates, rather than in proper kennels," says Jack Kennon, the volunteer program manager at ACC in East New York.

He says that those who aren't ready to adopt can also foster, volunteer and donate to help hundreds of pets find loving families.

ACC is also opening a new shelter in Ridgewood this year. When that happens, the shelter in East New York will close temporarily while they build a new facility.
