Local leaders say New York's reopening plan has been unfair to mom and pop shops.
Brookhaven town and business leaders called on the state to allow some small shops to open immediately.
They say many sell the same items as big box stores that have remained open during the pandemic.
"I'm looking at many Main Street businesses that ask me, 'Mr. Romaine, how come Walmart or BJ's or Costco are open selling the same products that I'm selling, yet I'm not allowed to sell those products?'" says Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine.
Businesses have expressed worry that prolonged closings will threaten their long-term future.
