Suffolk County police are actively investigating after a woman was found stabbed to death inside her Brentwood home Tuesday evening.
Officers responded to 55 W. White St. just before 5:30 p.m. after receiving a 911 call.
Investigators identified the victim as Melida Velasquez, 59. They discovered her body inside her home with stab wounds.
West White Street remains closed Willen Lane and Chapel Hill Drive. The home is across the street from North Elementary School, but Brentwood School District officials sent a message to parents this morning that said the investigation will not impact the school day.
"We are aware of a police investigation taking place near North Elementary School," Brentwood Superintendent of Schools Wanda Ortiz-Rivera wrote. "Please be assured that the incident is unrelated to the school, and all students and staff are safe. The school remains open and operating on a normal schedule. We remain in contact with law enforcement and will provide updates if necessary."
Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
