The 26th annual Boat/Camp in Darien is giving kids the opportunity to experience Long Island Sound.

The camp was started as a way for people to share their love of the water with underserved children.

The one-day camp partners with ROSCCO, Person-to-Person and Darien Sail and Power Squadron to provide safe on the water experience for children from Camp ROSCCO.

Campers began their day by boarding boats from the Noroton Yacht Club. They sailed around the Sound and visited different sites including Sheffield Island lighthouse and Green Ledge Lighthouse.

They also met pirates in Ziegler's Cove, watched demonstrations from fire and police marine units and received ice cream.

"What I hope they get out of it is they get to see how much joy there is from being in the water. Many times they take the helm and drive the boat for a few minutes and they get to see the joy of just being in control of a big thing in the water, the breeze blowing in their hair and having a wonderful time," say Gerry Raasch, event coordinator.

Since it began, Boat Camp has introduced the Sound to over 1,500 campers.
