Jeff Schmier has been the Bethpage High School ice hockey coach for 17 years. He's seen his share of big wins, but what he saw Sunday made him fall to his knees.
Schmier's Eagles rallied from a 2-0 deficit with five minutes to go against Bellmore-Merrick to win the NYS Club Hockey championship in Jamestown, NY.
"When the game winning goal went in, I crumbled into my assistant coach's arms and said 'I cannot believe this just happened. This is a miracle,'" said the coach.
Marko Lisica scored the game-tying goal with about a minute to go, tying the championship game at two. Then, Stavros Likourentzos won it 1 minute and 13 seconds into overtime with a blast from the left side that beat the goalie and set off the Eagles celebration.
"It was an unbelievable effort for the team and I'd say it was a miracle on ice," said Likourentzos.
Coach Schmier also gave credit to Lisica for giving a passionate speech that fired up the team going into overtime.
"Marko's speech got us all fired up for the final period. And then he gave a speech after the game pointing out all the heroes that made it happen including our goalie Matteo Bellise. Marko is a leader, when he talks you have to believe him," said Schmier.
"I said it before the third period that the team that's closer has a chance to come back in the third period. And we just connected and we we're going to go out as brothers. Then we went out on top," said Lisica.
The Eagles also won their conference title and the Nassau County championship. They finished the season 21-3-1.
