A Bethpage mom and her two sons are facing charges after what police say began as a home burglary and ended with a fight with police officers.
The incident began on Wednesday night at a home on Lowell Street in Bethpage. Police say John Colwell, 19, banged on the front door and got into a verbal argument with the 65-year-old homeowner. Police say when the teen rushed toward the man, the homeowner grabbed a baseball bat and hit Colwell in the head.
The fight spilled inside the house and someone called police. No one at the home wanted to speak with News 12 Long Island about the incident.
Police say the Bethpage homeowner was also taken to the hospital with three fractured vertebrae.
Neighbor Molly Nocerito says the teen was visibly drunk, and he had also knocked on her door that night, asking for someone who lived around the corner.
"I told him he had the wrong house, he left with no problem, he shook my hand and said, 'I'm so sorry to bother you,'" said Nocerito. "Somehow, he ended up next door and 15 minutes later the cops were here."
Colwell was taken to Nassau University Medical Center where police say the teen's mother, Danielle, and brother, Liam, showed up.
Police say they asked the pair to leave the hospital room, but Danielle refused and became combative. They say Liam allegedly jumped on the back of an officer and began to attack him before being subdued with a Taser.
One Nassau police officer suffered a sprain to his back.
The two were charged with assault and resisting arrest, and both pleaded not guilty in court Friday. They were released without after from Hempstead court.
John Colwell is expected to be arraigned when medically practical.
