A Bay Shore man is facing a drunken driving charge after police say he drove his car off a pier and into the Great South Bay in Sayville early Sunday morning.

Suffolk County Police say they responded to Sayville Marina Park, located at 400 Foster Ave., around 6 a.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting a vehicle in the water.

Police said Nicholas Volpicelli, 26, of Bay Shore, was driving a Toyota Camry when the vehicle went off the pier and into the bay.

The car came to rest about 50 feet from shore and was partially submerged, police said.

Authorities say Volpicelli was able to get out of the vehicle and make it back to shore on his own.

He did not appear to be injured, but was taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk in Patchogue for evaluation.

Volpicelli was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Police say as of around 8 a.m. the car is still submerged in the water.
