A woman and her boyfriend are in jail after police said the pair left a boy they were baby-sitting alone in a cold car while they were at a bar Sunday.
Police said Ruth Campos, 19, and her boyfriend Chyan Gilbert, 21, left the 18-month-old, who Campos was baby-sitting, alone in a locked car at a Bay Shore bar for at least 30 minutes.
Two people saw the child and called 911 around 1 a.m., according to police. A police sergeant said the Good Samaritans described the boy as looking scared. The witnesses told police it was very cold and the car had not been running.
Officials said the boy's mother left her child in Campos' care when she went upstate to visit relatives. The boy is now being cared for by a grandparent.
"I think that's terrible," said Pura Simancas, Campos' aunt. "I mean, it's insane."
Campos' brother also admitted that his little sister showed poor judgment, but said it was a mistake.
Campos and Gilbert are being held in jail on $5,000 bail each. They face a charge of endangering the welfare of a child.
