Deer Park residents expressed concern Thursday about a plan developers hope will alleviate traffic around the new Tanger Outlet Center.
Town of Babylon officials approved the construction of a Tanger Outlet Center on the old Fairchild site off Commack Road. In order to lessen the traffic burden caused by a projected seven million shoppers a year, developers and town officials will ask consumers to take the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to the Deer Park station and use a new, free trolley shuttle to the stores. Babylon Town Supervisor Steve Bellone believes up to 450,000 vehicles a year could be taken off the roads by the trolley.
John McHugh, a Deer Park resident of 43 years, says the plan was ill conceived. McHugh claims the area is far too congested for an additional outlet complex and several roads will need work.
