Fire crews and hazmat teams responded to a massive five-alarm fire at a commercial building in Westbury Wednesday afternoon that took hours to get under control.
More than 20 crews responded to the call at Advanced Powder Coating on Magnolia Avenue, according to the Nassau Fire Marshal's Office.
The fire marshal's office says firefighters were evacuated from the building because the fire compromised the integrity of the roof. Several parts of the roof have since collapsed.
According to the fire marshal's office, corrosive materials were in the building. Hazmat crews were also at the scene to test the air and water for potential toxicity. News 12 is told the tests came back negative.
Fire officials say a 911 call reported that the flames erupted in one of the ovens of the business.
The blaze quickly raced through the immense 200-foot by 200-foot building, making it a tough fire fight.
The Nassau fire marshal used a drone to assist firefighters.
"The drone brings an additional layer of information," says Assistant Fire Marshal James Hickman. "He can zoom in to help direct water streams, direct the chief as to where hotspots are."
News 12 viewers reported seeing smoke from the fire from several miles away.
