PowerSchool says its system used by parents, students and teachers for grades and attendance was hacked in December.

The company tells News 12 that Social Security numbers and medical information may have been involved in the breach.

Massapequa, Smithtown Central, Nassau BOCES, Uniondale and Middle Country school districts say they use PowerSchool.

"What I don't get is why would anybody be interested in that information? What are they looking for," said Sandra McCain, of Uniondale.

It's not currently clear how many schools on Long Island have been impacted by the data breach. News 12 reached out to PowerSchool and a spokesperson refused to disclose which districts are affected.

Security expert Adam Schwam says once a person is 18 years old, hackers can use the compromised information to open credit cards.

"My advice to everyone is to get yourself and your family members on some type of credit monitoring and identity reporting program," said Schwam, CEO of Sandwire.

Smithtown Central tells News 12 the FBI is now involved.

News 12 has reached out to the agency but has not heard back.
