An Amityville woman is facing murder charges in connection to a car crash that killed her passenger and a woman riding a bicycle.
Prosecutors say Elizabeth Stenson, 58, struck Cari Widmyer while she was out for a bike ride with her father, Dennis, along New South Road in Hicksville last June. Dennis Widmyer says he was struck in the leg during the incident.
Cari was visiting from California when she was killed.
"Of all places to have an accident, down the street from your house with your father – being careful and on bicycles," Widmyer told News 12. "She's been mountain climbing, ice climbing, parachuting – you name it."
Stenson's attorney says this was nothing more than a horrific accident that did not involve alcohol or drugs.
Stenson surrendered to police Friday morning and pleaded not guilty to murder and reckless driving charges. She was remanded without bail and is due back in court next week.
She faces a maximum of 25 years to life in prison, if convicted.
