An Amazon Flex driver's vehicle was stolen while delivering a package in Newark.
A Ring doorbell camera captured the moments when the thieves drove off with Jose Tavares’s SUV. One of them got in and drove off with the vehicle, which was parked on Grand Avenue. The other one followed on foot.
Tavares says the SUV was on but that he had the key fob in his pocket. He says that when he parked, there was nobody around and that the perpetrators came out of nowhere. He claims the individuals were wearing ski masks and it happened within seconds.
"Like a nightmare," Tavares said in Spanish. He described the moment as a nightmare. It happened three days before Thanksgiving. The following Monday, Newark police returned his vehicle. But it wasn't a happy ending.
The vehicle had been wrecked and trashed. The seatbelts and the seats were slashed. The words “EBK Gang" were written on one of the seats.
Tavares says he was disgusted.
The husband and father of two says he works so hard to pay for his vehicle because he needs it to be able to provide for his family, something that at the moment, he can't do. He states the insurance company has the vehicle as the case is under investigation.
Amazon told News 12 that they are investigating the incident.
