A two-alarm fire destroyed the top floor of a building in Allerton Friday afternoon, displacing more than a dozen people.
It started in apartment 6D, which was left with the most damage. It took firefighters about an hour to get the flames under control.
The fire left one person fighting for his life in the hospital. There were minor injuries to another person and a firefighter.
The hallway windows were all open Saturday morning to let out some of the smoke smell that has taken over the upper floors of the six-story building. All of the D line apartments have vacate orders and some of them have padlocks on the doors.
News 12 spoke with a resident that lives on the fourth floor. He has water damage in his apartment from firefighters’ efforts. He must vacate his apartment because the power is shut off.
"Once the firefighters put that out, a lot of water was seeping down through the ceiling in the walls,” said Dan Cartey. “My kitchen was pretty damaged…And now we're just sort of waiting for that damage to be repaired...I'm here back to get some stuff. It's quite disruptive,"
The Red Cross is now helping him and 11 other people in the building. They do not know when they will be able to return to their apartments.
