The health commissioner for Orange County is leaving that role to become the new commissioner of health for Nassau County.
Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus announced Wednesday that Dr. Irina Gelman will take on the new role.
"I want to congratulate Dr. Gelman on her new position and wish her the best," Neuhaus said. "I commend Dr. Gelman for her tireless work for Orange County, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, as she played an integral role in the response to the unprecedented public health emergency. I know Dr. Gelman will be an asset to the residents of Nassau County."
Gelman was hired as the commissioner of health by Orange County in July of 2018. She will replace Dr. Lawrence E. Eisenstein, who recently resigned as health commissioner of Nassau County.
Neuhaus said that a search for Dr. Gelman’s replacement will begin immediately.
