The biggest travel weekend in more than a year is underway.
Millions of Americans are traveling this Memorial Day weekend by train, plane and automobiles.
Robert Sinclair, of AAA, says more than 37 million people are hitting the road, which is up 60% from last year.
Today is expected to be the busiest day of the weekend to fly. Transportation Security Administration officials say there will be longer security lines.
Travelers at LaGuardia Airport say they're ready to take off once again. Some are heading to sunny beach destinations like Miami while others are visiting the Rocky Mountains.
"Over this holiday weekend, we are expecting 65,000 to 70,000 passengers per day through our checkpoints,” says TSA Federal Security Director Robert Spinden.
Despite new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that fully vaccinated Americans are safe to ditch masks, face coverings are still a must during air travel.
This year, most people will be driving to their destination. This comes as gas prices in the U.S. are spike to their highest in seven years.
"People have always preferred driving for the most part for a holiday trip or a summer trip, says Sinclair. "It gives you independence."
The average for a gallon of regular on Long Island is $3.06.
The website hopper.com says there are last minute hotel deals in several popular cities including Las Vegas, Chicago, LA and Atlanta.
