Acting Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder and Executive Laura Curran visited some precincts throughout the county Wednesday – one day after they announced the creation of the Commissioner's Community Council for each of Nassau's 19 legislative districts.
The CCC will be comprised of four to six civic leaders and/or community-minded people in an effort to further address the needs and concerns of Nassau's neighborhoods while increasing accountability.
"You have natural leaders in every community," said Ryder. "They have reach in their community that's non-political."
Barbara Powell, the vice president of the Hempstead branch of the NAACP, says it's a long time coming.
"Often, I think people are not comfortable, let's say in my district, with speaking with the police," said Powell. "We've been waiting for this and I think that there needs to be the open dialogue with the community. We embrace this."
Anyone interested in applying to become a community liaison is asked to contact their local legislator.
