A deadly multivehicle crash in Gravesend left one person dead and several others injured.

Police say the crash happened around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of West 11th Street and Avenue S. Investigators say an FDNY vehicle traveling eastbound on Avenue S collided with a commercial van heading north on West 11th Street.

Police say the impact pushed the FDNY vehicle into an Access-A-Ride van, which was then forced into a Lexus.

EMS transported 10 people to nearby hospitals. Police say one of them, 78-year-old Placido Dandrea, was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries.

Neighbors who heard the crash described the scene as chaotic, saying they rushed outside after hearing a loud boom.
