Ruby Kast is a 95-year-old substitute teacher at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

She has taught generations of students, including the children of her former students and even some of their grandchildren.

She said the job gives her purpose and she has no plans to retire.

Kast is never short on pearls of wisdom.

She advises others to “put out a hand for somebody, smile at somebody, make somebody else feel good,” because “then you feel better, you really do.”

Ruby’s wisdom is complemented by a wicked sense of humor.

She jokes that she “majored in boys” when she was in school.

A former student described Ruby as a gem. “

"She’s a jewel. Her name is so perfect for her,” said Tricia McGoey. Ruby says people can choose to be happy and choose not to be happy.

She chooses happiness every day.
