The Long Beach community came together Saturday to raise money for a Floral Park boy with a rare degenerative disease.
Ethan Demmers, 13, has been battling Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy since he was 5 years old.
The disease is a rare, progressive and degenerative muscle disorder that has no cure, but Demmers is not alone in his fight.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy mostly affects boys and occurs in one in 3,500 to 5,000 newborns.
Friends and strangers teamed up at a volleyball tournament to raise money to help with his medical bills.
The funds also benefit the Parent Project for Muscular Dystrophy, which is an advocacy group that provides support for people with DMD.
"I think it's amazing. I'm so glad all these people want to come out here and just help me out,"Demmer says.
Since the tournament began eight years ago, it has raised about $20,000 to help Demmers combat his disease.
