An 82-year-old man has died, and his 42-year-old son is in the hospital after a house fire in Huntington Station.

Fire officials say the fire spread quickly.

"Got real hot real quick, and I just think he tried to make his way out, and he just didn't have enough time to get out," said Scott Cloonan, first assistant chief, from the Huntington Manor Fire Department.

Barry Garfman and his son, Dustin Garfman, lived in a legal apartment on the second floor.

Firefighters say Dustin Garfman was able to get out of the house by himself, but they found 82-year-old Barry Garfman in a back room on the second floor.

Warren Ross says his friend lived on the first floor, renting a separate apartment.

"He's OK, got his cat, but now all the friends are just getting together trying to help him out, get him an apartment, get him some clothing," Ross said.

"I just saw him. I was talking to him the other day but he's a nice guy a really nice guy. I'm sorry to hear that," said Freddie Carbajal, a neighbor.

Officials say the fire at the home on Depot Road started around 11 p.m. Sunday in a room on the second floor.

Fire officials say clutter inside the home made it difficult for firefighters to get inside, but they had it under control in 45 minutes.

"I'm sad that somebody passed away because of it, somebody's in the hospital, but you know my heart goes out to them," said Dan Lynch, a neighbor.
