Racing was back at Belmont in front of a live audience
Saturday for the first time since Oct. 27, 2019.
Pat McKenna, of the New York Racing Association, called it
“552 long days.”
“We have absolutely missed their energy, their enthusiasm.
These are the most passionate racing fans in the world,” he said.
Park capacity is being limited to 20% - roughly 7,000
spectators, and tickets must be purchased online. Attendees will also need a
valid Excelsior Pass or proof of full vaccination to enter the park.
“If you are not fully vaccinated, then New York state
requires a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of the event,” says
McKenna.
To help with safety, the NYRA partnered this weekend with
Quest Diagnostics to offer COVID-19 rapid tests on site.
Park capacity is expected to increase to 33% later this
month. The final leg of the Triple Crown race - The Belmont Stakes - is
scheduled for June 5.
