5 children in hospital after head on collision between bus and SUV in Calverton

The Shoreham-Wading River School District confirms that one of its students returning from a BOCES program was on the bus.

A collision between a bus and SUV in Calverton caused five children to be taken to hospitals.

Riverhead police say just before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, they received a call for a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of New York State Route 25 and Route 25A.

The bus, travelling westbound on Route 25 collided head on with a Chevrolet Tahoe that was heading eastbound from Route 25A onto Route 25, according to police.

The operator of the bus was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital. The five children on the bus were all transported to various other hospitals as well. The operator of the Tahoe was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center. None of the victims were said to have injuries that were considered life-threatening.

The Shoreham-Wading River School District confirms that one of its students returning from a BOCES program was on the bus.

The crash is still under investigation, Riverhead police are asking anyone with information to call 631-727-4500.
