After being canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, the 45th Hampton Classic made its much-anticipated return today and is underway in Bridgehampton.
Thousands of people are expected to come to watch the nation's best equestrian athletes compete.
With more than $800,000 dollars in prize money up for grabs, the show attracts the best hunter, jumper and equitation riders from around the country.
More than 1,500 horses and ponies come to the show each year.
Opening day is when local riders get the chance to shine.
Hampton Classic Executive Director Shanette Cohen says, "We have a lot of competitions specifically geared to our Long Island-based competitors. We have a lot of hunter divisions, and we have one premiere show jumping competition, a $30,000 class."
One of the most popular events of opening day is the lead line featuring children, some as young as two years old, on their ponies and horses.
The Hampton Classic runs from today until Sept. 5 with the $300,000 Hampton Classic Grand Prix.
News 12 will continue to show you all the cuteness and other exciting events at the Hampton Classic throughout the day.
