Man killed in East New York hit-and-run; witness says victim pushed woman out of the way

Authorities say the victim was walking on East New York Avenue and Broadway when an unknown vehicle struck him.

A 36-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run crash Thursday night in East New York, according to police.

Police say a driver was speeding down East New York Avenue and Broadway around 10 p.m. when they hit the man and kept going.

Witnesses tell News 12 the car, confirmed by police to be a silver sedan sounded like it was traveling at a high rate of speed, and struck multiple construction barriers before colliding with the 36-year-old in the intersection.

He was then hospitalized and pronounced dead.

One witness told News 12 the victim was walking with a woman who he pushed out of the way prior to impact.

Police set up a traffic checkpoint Friday morning to reduce speeds. At around 12:30 p.m. another hit and run involving a delivery driver and a blue SUV took place at the same intersection with the SUV speeding away.

Police now searching for both drivers, and working to identify the deceased victim.
