30-year-old Newark woman killed by NJ Transit bus in East Orange

A 30-year-old Newark woman was killed Monday morning after being struck by a New Jersey Transit bus in East Orange, authorities said.

The crash occurred at about 6 a.m. at the intersection of Evergreen Place and Freeway Drive East, according to the Essex County prosecutor's office.

A preliminary investigation found that the NJ Transit bus struck Eva Malcom, a 30-year-old pedestrian from Newark, while making a right turn onto Freeway Drive East, authorities said.

Malcom was trapped under the bus and extricated before being taken to University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The bus driver remained at the scene, officials said. There were no reported injuries to the driver or the 16 passengers on board, according to NJ Transit.
