Fire damages 3 apartments in Hempstead; 12 displaced

Officials say they received a 911 call for a fire in an apartment on the first floor of a three-story multiple dwelling on Jerusalem Avenue.

At least three apartments were seriously damaged in a Hempstead fire.

Officials say they received a 911 call for a fire in an apartment on the first floor of a three-story multiple dwelling on Jerusalem Avenue around 6:30 a.m.

The Hempstead Fire Department responded and went to a third-alarm. Several mutual aids assisted.

All occupants self-evacuated the premises, and no one was injured.

The fire was under control in 90 minutes.

Nassau County Fire Marshal Investigators are on the scene along with the Arson and Bomb detectives.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Red Cross is assisting 12 displaced residents. All evacuees taken to Kennedy Park until safe to reoccupy.
