A $27 million project to improve the safety of Exit 53 on the Long Island Expressway in Brentwood is now complete, according to officials.
The state says the project added upgrades including two exit ramps from the expressway to Crooked Hill Road.
Officials hope the changes will reduce congestion around the Smithtown and Islip town borders.
"This means easier commutes. Whether that’s somebody trying to get to the grocery store, or a Suffolk County college student who literally has minutes between work and getting to class,” said NYS Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez.
There are also extra lanes to merge between the expressway and Sagtikos Parkway.
