One year after a 15-year-old boy was killed at a West Babylon house party, his killer was sentenced to 12 years in prison for stabbing him to death.
Liam Delemo's loved ones packed a Central Islip courtroom Wednesday to witness the sentencing of his killer.
Aiden Zachary was given 12 years in prison for stabbing Delemo to death.
Delemo was killed one year ago while at a large house party in West Babylon. He was just short of his 16th birthday.
Prosecutors say Zachary, 17 at the time of the party, was asked to leave and became "embroiled in an altercation" with Delemo. He stabbed the 15-year-old in the abdomen and arm, the Suffolk District Attorney's Office said. Zachary was charged with second-degree murder, which carries a maximum of 25 years to life behind bars. He pleaded guilty in October to manslaughter.
Zachary, now 18, spoke briefly, telling the court, "I’d just like to say that I’m sorry for what happened. I live with regret every day for what I did. I wish I could take it back, and I offer my condolences to the family."
Prosecutor Sheetal Shetty called the 12-year sentence "the deal of a lifetime" because she said the Delemo family wanted it to happen. She thanked them for the kindness and patience.
